Joel L. Michaels

Joel Michaels served as a partner with the law firm of McDermott, Will and Emery which has one of the largest and most highly rated health law practices in the United States. As Partner-in-Charge, he ran and managed the firm’s health law group in Washington, D.C. for 17 years before joining the Arizona State University Law School Faculty as an adjunct professor in 2018 and the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law in 2021. He also serves as adjunct faculty member at the American University Washington College of Law.

As part of his 42 years in private health law practice, Mr. Michaels represented some of the largest health insurers in the U.S. He was known for both his transactional and regulatory expertise in the health insurance arena. While in practice, he received the highest Chambers ranking in these two specialty areas.

As an adjunct faculty member, Mr. Michaels offers a seminar entitled “Health Insurance and Access to Care.” It is a comprehensive and contemporary look at the laws surrounding access to health insurance  and related health care services, changes to provider payment systems, prescription drug coverage challenges, and consumer engagement in the purchasing of health care coverage.

Mr. Michaels is a graduate of the American University Washington College of Law and holds a B.A. in Political Science from the George Washington University. He is a past Board member of the American Health Law Association and a current fellow with that organization.
